Longdendale Year 8 Experience Day
23 March 2015
Year 8 pupils from Longdendale High School recently visited Ashton Sixth Form College for an Experience Day ahead of starting options subjects in Year 9. The entire year 8 cohort of over 120 pupils descended on the college on the day of the partial solar eclipse.
After assembling in the canteen for toast and juice the group were led out to the peace garden to see their first ever Solar eclipse. Ashton Sixth Form College kindly provided pinhole projectors for pupils to view the eclipse safely and keep as a souvenir of the day, there were also demonstrations taking place with binoculars, colanders and various homemade projectors.
After a short welcome in the sports hall the pupils were split into groups for the first of three subject taster sessions. Former pupils from Longdendale High School acted as ambassadors, accompanying the groups and answering questions from the enthusiastic pupils throughout.
Sessions ranged from PE and Public Services sessions on the AstroTurf, where pupils were really enthusiastic and enjoyed working with our own sports students (who themselves gained some excellent experience of group work with young people). Further sessions included Music Technology (including DJ skills demonstrations and hands on experience), Law, Psychology, Business, Maths and Media Studies.
The pupils were also treated to a student life session put together by the ambassadors, which hopefully answered all the pressing questions about college that the young learners had on their minds.
The pupils were extremely well behaved throughout the day and had lots of positive comments after their sessions, the entire day was a really enjoyable and worthwhile experience for all.
